2005-06 NBA Fair Salary Ratings
(revised to include Playoff Earnings)

As we evolve away from the "Roland Ratings" one goal has been to scale player performance in terms of a "fair salary" or "salary dollars earned". We will still keep elements such as 1) Inividual player production, 2) One-on-one defense, and 3) Team success influence in the mix. However you also need to factor in minutes played!

If two players produce equal positive overall production, but one played twice as many minutes over the course of the season, clearly the player out there more is worth a lot more to his team!

We have updated these numbers however to include PLAYOFF EARNINGS, which means that non-playoff team players have seen their fair salary lowered as some portion of the total salary cap money is pushed into the "playoff pool." Players on teams that went deep into the playoffs have the potential for significant earnings. So while Shaq was on court for less than half the team minutes during the regular season, his playoff activity has catapulted him into the top twenty, which seems fitting!

So while our regular season only fair salary ratings had it LeBron-Kobe-Wade, when the playoffs are factored in, leading "Roland Rating" player Dwyane Wade winds up far ahead of those two, with Dirk Nowitzki moving into second place.

Seems right to us -- does anyone want to argue that Wade didn't have the best season when you look at the regular season and playoffs combined?

Now we like to calculate these things separately for each team a player appears with, but for the notable "two team" guys this season, here are some combined earnings:

Artest (Ind+Sac) -- $8.81 Million
Szczerbiak (Min+Bos) -- $8.31
Peja Stojakovic (Sac+Ind) -- $7.23
Ricky Davis (Bos+Min) -- $6.93

...so Ron Artest moves up to rank #49 on the season, alongside teammate Mike Bibby, and we'd push Artest up on subjective rankings as while his "individual production" wasn't phenomenal, his team influence certainly was for Sacramento! Moreover he missed a lot of playing time waiting for the trade, so could easily leap into the top 30 or higher with a "no incident" full season.

Szczerbiak moves to #56 overall, with Peja #58 and Ricky Davis #63.

Part of the benefits of these ratings is you can now evaluate which players are good and bad values based on their "earned salary" minus their "actual salary" --

Best Values
1. Dwyane Wade
2. LeBron James
3. Chauncey Billups
4. Tayshaun Prince
5. Dirk Nowitzki
6. Boris Diaw
7. Josh Howard
8. Elton Brand
9. Steve Nash
10. Carmelo Anthony
11. Chris Bosh
12. Kobe Bryant
13. Nenad Krstic
14. Vince Carter
15. Jason Terry
16. Richard Jefferson
17. Alonzo Mourning
18. Andre Iguodala
19. Gilbert Arenas
20. Ben Wallace

...you've got to love those rookie contracts if you can find a superstar in the draft!

Worst Values
503. Jalen Rose
504. Chris Webber
505. Tim Thomas (for Chicago, not Phoenix)
505. Antonio Davis
506. Grant Hill
507. Keith Van Horn
508. Anfernee Hardaway (minus $15.64 Million)

...which isn't to say these "worst value" guys are bad players, just that they didn't have the kind of seasons that would justify their -gulp- hefty contracts!

Now the ratings as they stand are based entirely on actual production, so no value is awarded to players for being "good in practice" or offering "veteran leadership" or even representing insurance policies in case a key player goes down with injury...all of which can certainly justify a certain "bonus" in deserved salary. Likewise players suffering injuries are usually not to blame for such misfortune, but they can't earn dollars in this scheme when they are missing time.

More development work is coming to make these ratings even better!
