Notable Team Physicality Details

  1. INDIANA was on top in active hands/hounding ballhandlers with 19 instances, although only +1 in wins, but the current evidence is that this category matters a great deal, and even the "non-wins" may take a toll over time.

  2. In addition they had two notable wins on "chucks" the first when Bradley tossed Brunson aside leading to an offensive rebound and second chance points, the second on a UOB play when Nesmith tossed Brunson to get a cut for an open dunk

  3. The Pacers also had category wins on the night in the challenging defenders at the rim/verticality defense aerial combo (+3 wins), but the biggest edge by far on the night was in the screening/fighting over screens area where they were a huge +13 wins with a grinding them down feel to it.

  4. NEW YORK on the other hand held the big edge in initiating contact on offense (+7), and "stymies" (making the defender pass out to reset) on defense (+4).

  5. NEW YORK also took the postups physicality on the night (+4 wins).

Analysis:

  • Karl-Anthony Towns again led the way with a very strong physicality game, leading all players in physcality plays, wins, level 2+ force plays and knockdowns. He is however listed as quesitonable for game five, and the physicality suffered numbers show the heavy burden he is facing.

  • Jalen Brunson did not shy away at all for the intense physicality, and was the high player with 11 falls, quite a few of which would be considered "hard falls". Just one win less than KAT but our storyline continues: his "physicality suffered" MUCH higher than Halibutron for the series.

  • OG Anunoby has his share of standout defensive moments in this series, but somehow seems to be losing the perceived Head-to-Head with Siakam.

Analysis:

  • Myles Turner again the top physicality player for the Pacers. With Robinson only playing 19 minutes for NYK (-20 plus/minus!), he spent a lot of the game battling with Towns, and the less glamourous roles of "screening, grabbing, boxouts" was a staple as well as trying to slow the KAT offensive outpouring.

  • Pascal Siakam Just solid game after game for physicality. The rebounding tussles are constant in this series and cost a lot of energy.

  • Tyrese Haliburton a stunning statistical night in the box score, .

Signature Physicality Moments

  • Q1 (3:43) Brunson beats the pressure
Nesmith pressures Brunson Toppin joins Jalen gets rid of the ball Achiuwa has it McConnell fights over to prevent McBride getting it Toppin knocks it out of Achiuwa's hands Brunson picks up Achiuwa hits Nesmith with screen Brunson drives at Toppin initiates contact and finishes for and one.

  • Q2 (10:39) Frenzied pace, but can the Knicks sustain it?
Mathurin tries to finish at rim after Towns turnover on post double, but Anunoby there to swat. Knicks go the other way leading to Towns FB 3, but McConnell goes coast to coast with the help of a Bradley screen to finish over McBride. Knicks come right back on FB to draw foul.

  • Q2 (6:36) OG defensive gem
Pacers on the move Nembhard drives while Turner blocks off OG but Anunoby with the forceful shove to get clear of Turner then meets Nembhard at the rim to deny strong effort.

  • Q2 (:32) Have the Pacers figured out Robinson?
Robinson sets hard screen on Nesmith opening up shot for Brunson then Robinson charges the glass Haliburton waylays but Nembhard comes in with strong bump to knock Robinson off balance and he tangles with Tyrese and falls FB the other way wide open 3 and Bradley chucks Brunson under the basket another miss but IND gets the oreb with the 2 on 1 on Anunoby leading to eventual layup for Bradley.

  • Q3 (7:56) Nesmith chucks Brunson
UOB Towns has Siakam tied up Brunson chases Nesmith through two ineffective offball screens Jalen has a grab on Nesmith but then Nesmith throws Brunson to the ground in front of the ref no call gets pass and strolls in for uncontested dunk.

  • Q3 (7:25) Robinson the man for a moment
Robinson overpowers OG posts Nembhard misses Mitch gets power rebound kicks out Towns posts Siakam misses Bradley doing a reasonable job boxing out Mitch but Nembhard-Anunoby boxout knocks him over for easy Mitch rebound and slam.

  • Q4 (7:52) Four straight fouls on NYK
Strange sequence of three non-shooting fouls, and then a shooting foul over 17 seconds on Anunoby, Hart, Towns, Hart..

  • Q4 (2:30) Have to be strong to play in this game
Pacers cover various Knicks actions until it winds up swinging to OG who drives past Siakam and elevates to finish over Nesmith but Nesmith has other ideas stays grounded and gets the charge call as both players fall.

  • Q4 (2:11) Towns takes big damage
Similar possession Nesmith drives at Towns but Turner with a sly physicality push of Towns into Nesmith causes collision and foul on Towns. But after challenge it is overturned to offensive foul on Turner. The damage to Towns is not insignificant.

  • Q4 (1:44) Stan says "it could have gone either way"
UOB play Knicks grabbing everywhere switch and grab Pacers trouble getting it in and Siakam makes a power move to cut dragging grabbing Hart along with him to draw foul as Hart falls (and fouls out).

  • Q4 (:46) Another UOB play undoes the Knicks
UOB play Brunson chasing Nesmith while Towns and Siakam hold each other Toppin looks like he is setting an offball screen but makes no contact and drifts behind the 3pt line gets the inbounds pass open 3 over closing OG game.

Final Take

Another close contest in physicality wins, but Indiana’s sheer volume told the story. The Pacers logged 83 more physicality plays and edged New York 138–133 in physicality wins, riding a tidal wave of collisions, boxouts, chucks, and vertical challenges to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

This game wasn’t won with elegance. It was won through endurance. Indiana didn’t necessarily out-tough New York in key moments—but they never stopped coming. Over four quarters of falls, fouls, and frustration, the Pacers’ volume wore the Knicks down.

...and the series long theme we have harped on — the Knicks have not put enough "physicality suffered" on Haliburton — played out with Tyrese posting a 32 Pts, 15 Ast, 12 Reb, 4 Stl, 0 T/O masterpiece. Brunson rates #1 in most physicality suffered among all players, Haliburton ranks #7. Does it help to get through a game/series without a lot of punishing hits? YOU decide...
