NBA Team Starter/Reserve Splits
It's becoming more common to see broadcasts and newspapers refer to the stats of a team's starters and bench players in a given game. While this is a difficult measure in that players go in and out of the starting lineup over the course of a season, and the roles vary considerably from team to team, we'll take a look at the team data so far.
Please note that the starter/reserve designation is particular to the given game, and not a reflection of who should be starting or would be starting if not for injuries.
Also note that the plus/minus numbers reflect the sum for each individual and so will not add up to the team total (as you have five players on court at the same moment, but only one "team" on court).
- Data as of Feb. 6, 2008.
- Poss = Estimated points per 100 possessions.

Various sorts could be interesting on this data set, and in particular the minutes distribution between starters and reserves seems important --
Bench Minutes per game
97.7 - Seattle
95.7 - Portland
93.2 - San Antonio
89.6 - Toronto
...
70.6 - Washington
68.4 - Phoenix
66.5 - Orlando
64.2 - Sacramento
Reggie Theus is getting some praise for his handling of the Kings this season, and one characteristic he's brought to his coaching so far is that his team leads the league in fewest bench minutes per game.
Now you may also be wondering about the 'defensive' side of the equation in how other teams' starters and reserves have fared.
