Random Stat:
Which players get their shot blocked the most?
Q: Would you folks know of a website that posts the stats on a player's shot
being blocked? I heard Jermaine O'Neal leads the league in this category
(i.e., more of his shots are blocked than anyone else), and I wanted to
check on that. -- Pavel
A: Why yes we do know of a web site that publishes stats on how often a player's shot gets blocked...this one right here! Yes indeed, if you go the 'player stats' page for a specific player, say in this case Jermaine O'Neal you can see how often the guy is getting stuffed, both overall, by shot type, and by shot clock timing.
Ah, but Pavel is looking for the leaderboard and until we put up our sortable pages for all teams/players (yeah one day that'll happen) it's not a simple matter to figure out who is best and worst. So...
The first thing to know is that the type of shot has a big influence on how likely it is to get blocked:
13.7% - Close shots (not dunks)
3.2% - Dunks
3.1% - Jumpers
As a result asking "who gets blocked the most" is a little unfair to the guys who take shots inside predominantly. Therefore we'll break it out for both all shots and only the close range/non dunk ones.

Overall we'd vote for Nenad Krstic as the guy getting the most shots sent back from whence they came.
Given the minimums we set, and the fact we're only a little over halfway through the season at this stage though, you could make a case that Carmelo Anthony gets his shot blocked about as much as anyone at close range. Of course that's not exactly a sharp criticism, as being able to get a shot off from close in is a big positive since they come with significantly higher average FG% then the "settled for" jumper from outside. Who has had the most dunks blocked? That would be Flip Murray tied for the league lead with 4 stuffed dunk attempts, but at a whopping 20% of total dunk tries!
