The Hawks aren't getting creamed with the most used lineup, but given that the future hinges presumably to a large extent on Marvin Williams and perhaps even Salim Stoudamire it would seem to make sense to use them more. With the playoffs a longshot and the team faring well with the young guys on court, why not? Maybe it's time to trade Al Harrington sooner rather than later.

What happens when you replace one guy in a five man unit? Sometimes quite a lot as the Celtics show! Making one change to the most used unit -- replacing Blount with Perkins -- has made a dramatic improvement in terms of team results (admittedly unadjusted by game state or opposing players faced). We have one word of advice for Danny Ainge: don't trade Paul Pierce for less than a superstar in return.

The most used unit has been unimpressive (a 4-10 game by game won lost +/- is not pretty). We're not Nocioni fans but have to admit to being disappointed with how Sweetney has played for his new team. |

With Hughes out, the Cavs have had to try and find alternatives. Personally we'd like to see some more of a Snow-Jones backcourt, and yes more Donyell and less Gooden. |

Dallas made the switch to Diop in the starting lineup instead of Dampier and it seems to have been a spark, with 'Damp also playing better now coming off the bench. Kudos also to Adrian Griffin who is the proverbial hustler/role player who is fitting in well alongside more 'talented' teammates. |

If you go back to the article we wrote a month into the season for SI.com on
playing time controversies, you'll note we said that Earl Watson needed to see more playing time as he is a difference maker (read strongly positive on court vs off court team influence). It took Karl some time to come round to our way of thinking but 'Hey Presto!' with Watson now in the starting lineup, the Nuggets are looking smooth and will be even better once Camby gets back.

Best five man unit in the league by far at this point. Here's something to take away perhaps from the Detroit team: depth in the NBA is over-rated. Sure it's nice to have a bench full of guys who can play in theory, but invariably it seems to degenerate quickly to where griping about minutes fractures the team. Of course you can get away with it if the team is downright dominant (ala the Spurs), but unless you are a superpower, perhaps the key is to focus on building that uber-unit that can dominate over many minutes a game.

The Warriors have been in a slump of late, and one issue may be that the most used unit simply doesn't have the best group characteristics. Replace either Dunleavy, Foyle, or Murphy with Derek Fisher and you've got successful five man groups. Mix it up a bit Monty!

Since McGrady and Ming have both suffered through injury riddled campaigns to this point, you can't blame the Rockets entirely for how things are panning out. Still the over-reliance on Howard was not to our mind the best approach. Newcomer Charles Hayes on the other hand looks to be just what the doctor ordered.

Clippers are another classic example of the "one different player" effect. Replace fill in Ross with a healthy Maggette and the team goes from a -10 and 51% W-L lineup to a +69 and 91% W-L lineup! All the Clips need is Corey to come back and they should be scaring people again.

You have to like the Wade-Posey duo for the Heat, who show up in each of the top four raw +/- leading units. That's not to suggest Shaq is not a force, but that with Mourning on board too the Heat have lots of rotation options (if they beat Detroit we may have to take back the earlier depth is over-rated comment...)

There are a number of NBA analysis folks who believe the Bucks are living on "borrowed time". A phenomenal record in close games is hiding the fact that these guys get outplayed on a pretty regular basis. Now we wouldn't mind seeing a bit more Toni Kukoc...

There's hope Orlando fans! Dwight Howard is going to be very, very good for a long long time. Stick Nelson on the court, or if you're really lucky Grant Hill and you might have something.

The Suns are quite the story: shocking most NBA followers by posting an impressive record with Amare Stoudemire still a long way from returning. Indeed one of the more interesting rotation debates will arise in Phoenix when Amare comes back -- who do they sit down? This team folks could be very strong in the playoffs.

The most used unit has the worst raw +/- in the league at -56 (a Charlotte unit has managed to post an amazing -47 net in 59 minutes with an 0-7 game by game WL). All is not lost though as the three names on the roster in Randolph, Miles, and Telfair have combined for some decent results in certain combinations.

Another challenge in rotation management is in store for Rick Adelman with the imminent arrival of Ron Artest. We're kind of liking what we see from Mr. Garcia lately so hopefully his minutes don't get curtailed too strongly. There's talent here and the playoffs should definitely be in the cards, barring a Ron Ron self destruct sequence.

The Spurs know it's the playoffs that matter and have numerous powerful 5-man units they can turn to. Particularly interesting is the perfect 12-0 game by game plus/minus won lost record by Parker-Finley-Bowen-Horry-Duncan. Last year it was that lineup with Ginobili instead of Finley that was the real go-to top option.

Coming out of nowhere (well deep at the end of the bench) is Robert Swift who has suddenly become a factor in Seattle's recent play. Of course playing Danny Fortson more minutes would have helped from the get go, instead the relationships may be beyond repair with Danny now.

The Raptors fired GM Rob Babcock today, the question being why now? Certainly the Vince Carter trade will go down as one of the worst ever. However, that's in the past and the Raptors have at least been respectable over the last month after the hideous start to the season. The most successful lineup features two rookies and Mike James acquired in a trade.

You would think a team with Andrei Kirilenko would have a unit or two featuring AK that had posted some nice numbers. Instead the best AK lineup is only +22. Okur at the PF spot on the other hand is a mainstay in all the top performing groups.

The Wizards are starting to give more playing time to Daniels and with good reason -- it's taken him some time to adjust, but as he showed in Seattle, he can help a team win.
