Random Stat: Assisted Field Goal Percentages
Q: I had a thought for a stat for your site to follow (maybe you do already): assisted ad unassisted baskets. Who scores the highest percentage of their points on assisted baskets vs those who score the lowest percentage on assisted baskets.
-- Coach McCormick
A: yup, we've got this one covered too...check out any given player's in depth stats page (eg see the LeBron James in depth stats page), and you'll see we post the overall assisted FGM %, as well as the Ast'd rate for different shot types, and shots at different points of the shot clock.
Let's do a little leaderboard look though!

Welcome to the land of "catch and shoot" and/or "layup off the feed"...
As you'll notice, a lot of these players are the three-point gunners (ala Bowen, Korver, Posey, Marshall) who hang out behind the line waiting for the pass and open look.
More surprising perhaps are some of the bigger interior players like McDyess and Haslem who are so reliant on a teammate setting them up.
And of course it's hard not to notice that among the top twenty players we have three Phoenix Suns, with high FGM numbers no less. If you sort for "most assisted FGM made" to this point, you'll find the leaders are:
- Rip Hamilton 341 (77.1%)
- Marion 336 (77.4%)
- Anthony 265 (64.3%)
- Brand 270 (57.6%)
- Jamison 260 (68.4%)
- Garnett 253 (59.7%)
|
Now we're not implying there's anything wrong with knocking down the shot from a nice pass. Still, there is something to be said for being able to create your own shot, which is where the guys in the 80%+ range are generally a little less capable, unless they simply have a role that doesn't call for it. The other side of the rankings shows as follows:

Obviously point guards who have the ball in their hands to begin a possession most of the time are likely to score a fair amount without an assist (or without even letting another teammate touch the ball at all!) and not surprisingly our lowest assisted% look has a plethora of the ballhandling gurus.
Marbury is very rarely getting an assisted look, while a number of high scoring types show here, with the likes of Iverson, LeBron and Parker.
It's safe to say these guys are capable of creating off the dribble, both for themselves and their teammates.
The most unassisted FGM on the season lists as follows:
- Iverson 410
- L.James 381
- Bryant 352
- Wade 307 (34.5% Ast'd)
- Arenas 287 (35.7%)
- Parker 287
|
Now the type of shot does make a difference often -- the league wide assisted FGM rate by shot is:
73% - Dunks
63% - Jump shots
47% - Close shots
Looking at the high/low by shot selection finds:
